Lake Trout tips for Blue Mesa

Post By: jdavis Posted: 8/2/2016 5:27:17 PM     Points: 67

Howdy,

Taking my first trip to Blue Mesa ever. Leaving tomorrow to spend a week camping (Elk Creek) at the lake. I have a boat with electronics. I have fished for Lake Trout a lot at Granby. Any tips you guys can share for Blue Mesa?

So far my plan is to jig with smallish tubes and twister tails with sucker meat in 70-100 FOW. I was thinking of hitting the Cebolla Basin where the Cebolla arm comes in.

Any other areas I might try or other tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Never been to blue Mesa but have heard the perch are taking off and moving throughout the lake. Perhaps perch patterns or colors could work well

If no luck there try around middle bridge and soap Creek South of soap Creek in the deeper water you might have luck.Good Luck let us know how you do good or bad.

the best tip there, is tell them to quit killing the mackinaw like idiots.

Brat is right - wish they would just leave them alone! Never caught any monsters, but have had decent luck with lakers at Blue. Rather than blasting any spots on here, shoot me an email - brad@ reclametals.com

I've never been either. Dunno if I ever will with their death fleets.

Sorry for the late reply but have been busy with other things. Lake Trout this time of year are a tall order. They will be deep and pretty sluggish. The spot you mentioned can be good right on the drop off or dead center of the creek channel. Also where Cajun suggested can be good.

Sorry to cause any controversy, but the lake trout killing in blue mesa isn't the evil empire that it's made out to be. I went out on a boat to volunteer last fall and plan on doing it this fall. They are culling sub 20 inch fish so that we can continue to sustain a trophy lake trout population and a premier kokanee fishery. I also think that the perch are a serious problem within the ecosystem, but trying to kill millions and millions of sub 6 inch fish is simply not feasible. Anglers are doing their part with the perch, and the CPW is working hard to keep a balance within a remarkable fishery. They don't murder each and every lake trout, as I held and released several 20 plus pound fish. Just my 2 cents!

Stay Sharp

Really enjoyed my trip to Blue Mesa. Did pretty good. Lot of fish 20-22".
rkhancock good call on the perch pattern. One fish threw up a whole perch in my boat lol.

I had the most luck at 70-50 FOW on sandy flats.

Also, to anyone who might hit this thread by searching, a few things you might want to know:

1. Bring a roll of quarters if plan on showering. 12 quarters for 10 minutes. Be sure to bring some shower shoes... showers by the boat ramp were pretty gnarly.

2. Don't expect to find ANY jigging tackle at Elk Creek or Lake Fork marina. Gene Taylors in Gunnison is a great tackle shop.

3. Don't eat at Pappy's.. just have beer on the deck.

4. The electric campsites don't have a water hook up.

5. To get pretty much anything you will need to drive 16 miles to Gunnison.

6. The W Cafe in Gunnison is awesome.

7. At Elk Creek Marina slips W2, W4, and W6 are two hour courtesy slips anyone can use.

Good Luck!

We thought Pappys food was ok. The fries and anything else out of the deep fryer was real good.

Not arguing with you. After a day on the lake I would still eat there before I cooked or drove to Gunnison though. My son really liked his chili dog there...most kids would like eating there.

I ate there twice lol. After 11 hours fishing I'll eat anything haha. I have gotten spoiled eating at the Roadhouse in Granby all summer.

My philly cheesesteak was ok but the burgers looked better. There aint much to choose from there for sure.

The phiily cheesesteak I had was ok but the burgers looked better. The rental boats at the marina are in good shape but the fishfinders suck and we didnt have an anchor so perch fishing was impossible. Cant complain over the folks at the marina...helpful and friendly. Cant say the same for Granbys marina.

Yeah, the people at Elk Creek Marina were nice. Yesterday evening when I came in I noticed this old bayliner that belongs to the marina was adrift lol. I went in and told them about it, they suggested I just pull the bung plug on it.. problem solved haha.

I was really surprised at the lack of tackle in the marina store though. It looked like all trolling gear to me. I'd at least expect some jigs and maybe some bobbers and j hooks for perch fishing. Seems like they are leaving money on the table. But I assume they know their business better than I do :S

And on Granby's marinas HAHHA. Yeah.. the lady at Beacon Landing is a barrel full of joy........ Haven't really done much business with the other two.
